Students vote to change school house names

Students at Ettalong Public School have voted to change their school house names.

"In house meetings, they unanimously decided on animals that have some of the colours from our current house groups," said principal Ms Jodie Campbell.

"Voting was held in their current houses.

"We will be starting a competition for the design of the mascots for our houses.

"Entries are open to all students K-6 and the competition will close Friday, August 9.

"We will then hold voting in house groups for the final mascot designs.

"The colours of red, blue, yellow and green will remain the same.

"The chosen house mascots and names are: Biya (red-belly black snake), wylah (yellow-tail black cockatoo), djungar (blue-ring octopus) and katukalung (green sea turtle).

"We are looking for creative designs and drawings that depict our newly-chosen animals for each of our houses."

Ms Campbell said: "Student voice is a crucial part of engagement across our school.

"We have two representatives in our Student Representative Council who specifically focus on ways to promote engagement.

"You will notice some changes throughout the school as a direct result of the work that they are doing.

"Things like more signage across our school and new handball courts are a direct result of their ideas."
