Strom prize renamed

A prize honouring the late Mr Allen Strom, a local environmentalist, has been renamed in the face of protests from the Woy Woy-based Association for Environmental Education.

The association has written to the Eureka Prize convenor to protest the name change: from the Allen Strom Prize for Environmental Education to the Allen Strom Award for Sustainability Education.

After discussion between the committee and others from the association's former State executive, representatives sent a letter to the Eureka Prize convener.

They noted their dismay at the change and stated that "Allen never practised sustainability education: his approach spanning 60 years was environmental education, based on environmental encounters."

They also said: "The award as it now stands does not honour Allen Strom."

They included with their letter a copy of a paper written by Mr Strom outlining his thoughts on environmental education.

Details of the correspondence are available at the Woy Woy Environmental Centre.

The Eureka Prize website is at http://www.amonline.net.au/eureka/.
