First sod turned at pool site
Gosford mayor Cr Malcolm Brooks, along with Cr Chris Holstein and former councillor Ms Judith Penton, turned the first sod of soil to signify the start of construction for the $21.7m Peninsula Regional Leisure Centre on Tuesday, May 4.
"This is going to be a world-class centre.
"We are very excited. The Peninsula is a growing area and this new centre will truly be an asset," Cr Brooks said.
"The leisure centre design reflects the needs of the community.
"It will be family-friendly, innovative and will lead the way for health and fitness on the Central Coast.
"The facilities are exceptional. There will be two full-size indoor basketball-netball courts, European style cafe, outdoor picnic barbecue area, 50m Olympic pool, grandstand, warm up pool, spa, sauna, gymnasium and an aerobics room.
"This will be a facility for everyone to enjoy.
"It has been designed to meet the needs of all our community from the very young to a hydrotherapy pool.
"In line with Council's commitment to achieve sustainability, a range of environmentally sustainable technologies will be used to build it including a water conserving filtration system."
Construction is expected to take 70 weeks to complete, weather conditions permitting.
