Trophy named after bowls administrator
The Central Coast District Bowling Association has named its Player of the Year award after Umina bowls administrator Wal Rainbow.
The trophy will now be presented for the award, to be known as the Wal Rainbow Shield.
The Player of the Year award was introduced to the association in 1991 by Mr Rainbow, who was the district president at the time.
Mr Rainbow is a long serving bowls administrator having served in numerous positions on the zone over the years.
He is currently the chairman of an innovative grading committee.
The idea for a continuing Player of the Year trophy came from the association's current vice-president, Mr Kevin Dring.
Mr Dring identified all winners of the award since 1991 so their names could be added to the shield.
Winners over the 12-year history include John Roberts from Ettalong who won it two consecutive years in 2001 and 2002.
Wal Rainbow said that he felt "such an award should be introduced at district level to recognise our top bowler on the Central Coast".
"It has become the zone's most prestigious award and I am honoured that the CCDBA executive choose to put my name to it," he said.
