Ocean seminar at Woy Woy

Local marine conservation group Ocean and Coastal Care Initiatives (OCCI) will highlight the Woy Woy Peninsula with a free seminar and coach tour and rock pool walk on World Oceans Day, Sunday, June 8.

The seminar at Woy Woy Leagues Club will be officially opened by Gosford mayor Cr Robert Bell at 10.30am.

This will be followed by a series of guest speakers and presentations.

Topics include the Port Jackson Shark Project being conducted in local waters by Newcastle University, a slide show of the unique sealife of the Central Coast, and introducing the Brisbane Water Process Study being undertaken by Gosford Council.

A double-decker bus will tour around Woy Woy, Umina Beach and Ettalong at 2pm.

Interesting sites include an eco-tour of the Woy Woy waterfront, a demonstration by the Community Seagrass Monitoring Project and a visit to Nature's Harlequins Shell Museum.

There will also be an evening Rock Pool Spotlight Walk at Pearl Beach, weather permitting.

Project coordinator Jeannie Lawson said: "This is a day to celebrate our magnificent waterways, coasts and ocean and the results being achieved by local people and local projects to help protect them."

Bookings are essential for all aspects of the event.

It is free to anyone booking for the seminar and tour. However the coach tour with no seminar costs $10 per adult.

The evening rock pool walk is by donation.

To book, contact Jeannie Lawson on 4341 4291.
