Aged care home makes transition to 'household' dining

A Woy Woy aged care home has changed from communal dining in one large area to "household" dining in four new areas created in the first stage of its redevelopment project.

"We are now operational in our four new dining areas in each of the 'households' across The Shores building," said Blue Wave Living chief executive Mr Matt Downie.

"This is a significant change as we have moved away from the large communal dining space to smaller more intimate dining spaces adjacent to domestic style kitchens and living areas.

"While it will be a learning process, the first week has gone relatively smoothly and we have received positive feedback regarding the change."

The change heralds the imminent start of the second stage of the redevelopment.

"The existing large central dining space will be steadily decommissioned in preparation for Stage Two works to begin," said Mr Downie.

"At this stage I would expect some partitioning to be established closing off this area fully for works sometime in May.

"Other areas also included in Stage Two works will be closed off as well, prior to construction works beginning.

"We have now received our development approval for Stage Two works from the council.

"We are now working through the construction certification process which is required before work can officially commence.

"I would expect work to commence sometime between mid-May and mid-June all being well.

"Stage Two works will be a six-month program, so the aim is to complete prior to Christmas.

"The central space in The Shores will be completely rebuilt and expanded, removing the existing servery, office and clinic room, and re-built with more of a club feel to accommodate large functions and activities.

"It will also feature a dedicated cinema space, a lounge area with a fireplace, a niche sitting area, and a bar and servery to support large functions.

"There will also be a permanent built-in barbecue area in the eastern courtyard.

"Aqua House is now full, and we only have a couple of remaining newly-built rooms available as part of our Driftwood Household.

"After those are gone, we will be at our current capacity."
