Interesting weeks for Lions

Woy Woy Rugby Union club has had two interesting weeks of results.

The second and third grade sides remain unbeaten after three rounds with convincing wins over Gosford and The Entrance respectively.

The first grade after leading 18-6 against Gosford at half time, lost on the stroke of fulltime 20-18.

"It was a strong performance from the Lions and one that that they can take a lot from, as Gosford will be there at the business end of the season," said coach Ross Hopkins.

Best for Woy Woy were Peter Wright, Paul Gooley and Benny Bula.

The second grade won a tight match 16-10 against a competitive Gosford side.

Best performers for Woy Woy were Ricky Parsell, Greg Kenney and Chris Chappell.

"The thirsty third grade continued on their winning ways with a great 26-7 win," he said.

"Being behind 7-0, the boys rallied around the elder statesman Stu Macdonald, to score 26 unanswered points."

Other players to impress were Ryan Macey and Moses Tamawileva.

When they boys played The Entrance at Bateau Bay, the first grade team after being down 15-0 early in the match came back to draw 20-20.

"In an entertaining match, the Lions showed that they can compete for 80 minutes scoring with three minutes to go," Ross Hopkins said,

"Vic Alipate was a stand out for the Lions and was backed up by Justin Allan and Steve Lauti both who had solid games.

"The second grade scored a comfortable 22-0 win with John Baxter winding back the clock to his Gordon days with a great game, and Greg Kenney and Grant Fennelly again playing good games."

The thirds came back from 5-0 down to record a 8-5 win.

"The Entrance in any grade are always difficult to beat at home and the Lions did well with Ryan Macey, Brennan Ellis, Glenn Touzel and Matt Tritton leading the way for the Lions," he said.
