Prime opportunity for open space
Once again the people of the Peninsula have been short changed, this time by shortsighted councillors who have denied the Peninsula open space that is in much demand.
Four parcels of land were rezoned from 6(c) open space to 2(b) allowing more medium density units.
We need more units and villas like a hole in the head.
So with the past experience of the council land grab at Lemon Grove and the tainting of property owners title in Alpha Ave and Florida Ave, one would have thought this the prime opportunity to obtain some new open space without affecting anyone.
This land should have been taken up by council to help alleviate the chronic shortage of open space recreation that exists and will be further exacerbated by the continual increase in population as stated in Council's own reports into the issue of open space and recreation on the Peninsula.
These blocks could become small local parks with playground that will be in demand with the continual growth in the number of children aged 0 to 10 and the less mobile population.
The desired character statement for Umina quotes "these should remain leafy mixed density residential areas".
This rezoning will lead to the eventual removal of at least 15 mature trees, mostly eucalypts, which is against the desired character statement.
This rezoning for medium density housing will only assist in denying the Peninsula of much-needed open space recreational facilities and put added strain on affordable rental properties on the Peninsula.
