Fireworks 'success'

Peninsula fireworks 2000 was an outstanding success according to the evening's event coordinator Ms Emma Ledingham.

"Many residents, business houses and police all agreed that it was the biggest and best event this area has seen," she said.

"The night was windy and wet, yet about 10,000 turned out to celebrate."

The event was initiated by the Rotary Club of Umina and the fireworks display was sponsored by East's Holiday Park at Umina.

Ms Ledingham said apart from a burst water pipe early in the day and the non-attendance by a few stallholders, the event went smoothly.

She said the 'battle of the bands' competition was popular.

Local punk band Fetal Mishaps took first prize and Cypher ran second.

Other entertainment included dance, singing, face painting and rides.

Ms Ledingham said Cooee the Clown was a hit with the kids with his antics on stilts, teaching the kids how to juggle and walk on stilts.

Ms Ledingham said the event would not have been possible without the sponsors and workers.

Sponsors included the Woy Woy Leagues Club, Ettalong Beach Club, Umina Bowling Club, Gosford City Council, SeaFM, Mitre 10 Umina, We're Sportswear, Woy Woy Printing, McDonalds at Woy Woy and East's Holiday Park.

Ms Ledingham said there were no incidents and that she had received congratulations from Mayor Chris Holstein.
