Concern over 'vandalism' of the Everglades wetland
The Melaleuca Wetlands Regeneration Group is concerned that the Everglades Lagoon is being vandalised by motorcyclists.
The group has spent close to 2000 hours repairing the previously neglected site.
Spokesperson Ms Nora Clarke said she did not know how many riders went into the park but their destruction had undone much of the group's work since 1996.
Council's manager for natural resources, Mr Craig Arms, said the problem was a perennial one.
"Council has the power to prevent people entering the area with a bike," he said.
However, he said policing that power was much harder.
"Typically, council officers are in four wheel drives and restricted to the fire trails within the reserve," he said.
"Bikes, by their nature, are nimble and mobile and can go anywhere."
Mr Arms said one of the best restrictions were to put bollards and barriers to restrict the bike riders' "fun".
However, it was difficult to put in the restrictions and barriers because pedestrian access had to be maintained he said.
"A bike can go anywhere a pedestrian can go.
"I'm concerned about the problem and my colleague is working on it at the moment."
