Planting day success at Guyangil Park
The Grow Urban Shade Trees group has held a successful planting day at Guyangil Park in Australia Avenue Umina Beach.
Organiser Ms Debbie Sunartha said 70 plants including wattles, mint bush, banksias, paper daisies, knobby rush and grevilleas were planted.
She said gardening could heighten so many sensory elements in children.
This was seen on the planting day as they explored the texture of the soil and the leaves, the scent of flowers, the feel of foliage and the visual beauty of nature.
"Guyangil was always designed to be a sensory park, so with the efforts of our young volunteers today, we look forward to more families coming to visit and watching their plants grow and thrive," Ms Sunartha said.
Volunteer Ms Mel Chandler said the park was "a forgotten space brought back to life, providing a pocket of native habitat and beauty for all locals - animal and human - to enjoy".
Anyone interested in helping maintain the park should email gust@peg.org.au.
