Second session for prospective councillors

A second information session for prospective councillors for Central Coast Council will be held on Tuesday, April 9, in Wyong.

The first information session was held in October and attracted 70 attendees.

A third session will be held in July.

Council director Ms Marissa Racomelara said: "This second information session will take a more in-depth look at what it means to be an elected councillor."

She said speakers would provide detailed information about the mechanics of how a council runs, the responsibilities of a councillor, their interaction with staff, and their role in the public domain.

"Local councils are the level of government closest to the community and provide key infrastructure, facilities and services to local residents," Ms Racomelara said.

One guest speakers was former Warringah and Northern Beaches mayor Mr Michael Regan, now an independent member of the NSW parliament.

Mr Regan's main platform for election as Warringah mayor in 2008 was to run "council as a board of directors".

Ms Racomelara said the other guest speaker would be "local government expert" Ms Kath Roach, a member of the Inner West Local Planning Panel, Waverley Council's audit risk and improvement committee; and a conduct reviewer on various Code of Conduct Panels for local councils.

She was former executive director of governance and regulation at the NSW Department of Housing, and the first internal ombudsman for a local council in NSW.
