Christmas lunch outing for Meals on Wheels recipients
A social group of 14 Woy Woy Meals on Wheels recipients has taken a trip to the service's Tuggerah distribution centre to have "a community restaurant experience" for a Christmas party.
The excursion was a prelude to the experience, with "fun-filled social activities", being offered in the coming year at Meals on Wheels "restaurants" across the region, including at Woy Woy.
The restaurants will be open to small senior groups seeking a luncheon and activity centre combined.
Adopting a slogan of "more than just a meal", the restaurants will offer a range of activities from a three-course dining experience mixed in with a movie, bingo, the North American corn hole game, jewellery making, and arts and crafts.
During the three-hour Christmas lunch at Tuggerah, attendees were offered tea and coffee on arrival, a Christmas ham and turkey meal, and a berry cheesecake for dessert.
Catering was provided by a team of seven young people supplied by work placement provider You Connect.
Meals on Wheels which relies on volunteers for meal deliveries and social connections, embraced the volunteer offer from You Connect, according to volunteer co-ordinator Ms Amy Baulman.
You Connect prepared the young people, aged 16 to 20, over the last six weeks for the occasion.
Training was provided to manage coffee orders, to co-ordinate oven cooking instructions and to follow food handling procedures.
"It was rewarding to watch these young adults excel in customer service, food preparation, and, most importantly, in creating priceless social interactions with their senior counterparts," Ms Baulman said.
