Toy donations 'surpass expectations'

The donations of toys for Christmas presents for disadvantaged children "surpassed our expectations", according to Umina Beach Rotary president Mr Wayne Dowdle.

The Rotary Club of Umina Beach had partnered with the Ettalong Community Bank in a toy drive in support of the Salvation Army.

"At the club's Christmas party, members brought along presents for children which were combined with those from the bank and passed on to the Salvation Army for distribution," he said.

Captain Lesley Newton from the Salvation Army thanked the club and bank staff.

"This year we have seen an increase in the need for assistance due to financial constraints that many families are living under," she said.

"But we have also seen an increase of generosity in our community to help.

"This year Umina Beach Rotary Club and Ettalong Bendigo Bank wanted to help us help others.

"Their generosity as individuals and as groups of people has been immense.

"The tears of joy and shock as those who have walked through our toy room choosing gifts for their children have been overwhelming."
