Rotary club to fund sewing workshop at Ugandan school

The Rotary Club of Brisbane Water will provide a grant to set up a sewing workshop at the Divine Mercy Primary School it supports in Uganda.

"The new sewing room will provide tailoring lessons for students in grades four to seven," said club president Ms Sue O'Neill.

"We have engaged local mums to produce school uniforms."

The club has secured a Rotary District grant for the project, which will cover the wage of a skilled tailoring teacher as well as several machines, fabric and other resources needed, Ms O'Neill said.

"This will be a valuable training centre to teach skills to students as well as local woman."

Students and women who have completed the course will be provided with a government-approved Certificate of Attainment in Tailoring, she said.

"Students become proficient through making a series of samplers."

They would learn to "sew straight lines and overlocking by making sanitary shields, liners and a drawstring bag".

They would make an unlined tote bag, a lined shopping bag and a purse with zip, as well as practice making collars, sleeves, buttonholes, waistbands and pleating, Ms O'Neill said.
