World Cup inspires early training

The Woy Woy Lions have started training for the 2004 rugby union season, hoping to increase their chance of reaching the finals.

"They were inspired by the excitement of the World Cup," said publicity officer Col Gooley.

"They want to make sure their 2004 season does not end before the thrill of the semi-finals." Under coach Ross Hopkins last season, the second and third division teams reached the semi finals.

"The first grade put in some improved displays only to miss out on the big ones at the end of the season," Mr Gooley said.

He said that the club hoped to retain all of its first grade players from last season with veteran Paul Gooley and Peter Wright first to sign on for pre-season training.

Greg Kenny, David "Jabba" Gooley, Dave Hendricks, Greg "Aussie" Smith, Rick Parcell and Danny May were among the seasoned first graders to make an early return.

Last season's front rowers Sione Tuitakau and Vince Alipate will also join young guns Ben Timmis, Brennan Ellis and Grant Fanelli in a large squad that trains every Tuesday at 6pm at Umina oval.

The bulk of the squad are about to commence a strength and conditioning program under the tuition of the Joel Keegan at Umina Beach PCYC.

Coach Ross Hopkins said that he was excited about the 2004 season.

"We are hoping to attract new players who will provide experience and depth to the club," he said.

"There is a desperation in the club for all grades to participate in next year's finals and the players realise that they have to change the culture and go through some pain if they are to improve on last season's performance."
