Grandfriends project is launched
Woy Woy Public School held a Grandfriends Day on Friday, October 24.
There were performances by school groups and the launch of the Grandfriends Project by Dorothea Marler from the Council on the Ageing NSW.
Year Six students served morning tea to the "Grandfriends".
"A Grandfriend is a volunteer senior citizen who is community minded, has a genuine love of children, and is able to share local knowledge and skills with students," Ms Merler said.
"Grandfriends also need to have a sense of humour, treat children as individuals and act as a surrogate grandparent or friend to children and as a grand friend to staff."
Grandfriends helped children with reading and writing skills, told children stories and showed them how to draw.
The school is seeking volunteer Grandfriends who are mobile enough to travel to a local school regularly and who are willing to undergo a prohibited persons check
For further information, phone Dorothea Marler on 4375 1125.
