Community event at Mingaletta garden

Aboriginal and non-indigenous residents on the Peninsula have been invited to a community event in the Mingaletta Community Garden at Umina Campus of BWSC on Friday, September 26.

Organised by the Nunyara and Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Health Unit, it aims to promote health and well-being and to reduce community isolation in the indigenous community.

"This event provides a valuable opportunity to showcase the wonderful efforts of the Mingaletta members and Brisbane Waters Secondary College staff and students in supporting a project aimed at improving the health of their local koori community," said Ms Loretta Hardcastle, Aboriginal Health Education Officer for the Nunyara Aboriginal Health Unit.

"Carrying on from this year's NAIDOC Theme, Our Children Our Future, a major focus of the day is Central Coast koori young people in providing a culturally acceptable and safe environment for them to gather and celebrate their community."

"Assisting on the day will be staff from The Eleanor Duncan Aboriginal Health Centre who have a formal partnership with Central Coast Health, and of course members of Mingaletta."

"Also playing an active role to engage the community in their programs will be DOCS Families First Team and the Department of Sport and Recreation," Ms Hardcastle said.

The event is the last one in 2003 for the Nunyara Aboriginal Health Unit.

There will be a barbecue lunch, drinks and fruit provided on the day as well as toddler craft activities and outdoor sports games.

There also will be an opportunity to see the Mingaletta Aboriginal Corporation 'grow you own market garden" and make contact with indigenous workers in the region.

Ms Hardcastle said that if non-indigenous members of the community wished to come along to see the community garden they would be most welcome.

"If people want to take the opportunity to network with the indigenous community and see the garden that would be lovely," she said.

The event will run from 10am to 2:30pm.
