Comic verse competition is launched

A comic and crazy verse competition has been launched for "Spikefest", the tribute festival to Spike Milligan in October.

The competition is for local school students, with an Open Competition for all Central Coast residents.

The idea of a competition and cavalcade of comic verse was conceived by the Bouddi Society, a community group centred at Killcare.

The Bouddi Society will be presenting "A Cavalcade of Comic and Crazy Verse" on October 10 and 11.

Works of writers like Lewis Carroll, A.A.Milne, Banjo Patterson, C.J.Dennis, Monty Python and of course Spike Milligan will be performed by skilled presenters, including Desmond Milligan presenting Spike Milligan poems at the October 10 performance.

The cavalcade will be brought up to date by presentations by our own local comic and crazy poets, who will be the winners of the competition now in progress.

Competition entrants are encouraged to write all forms of verse as well as limericks, and to illustrate them if they wish.

They can work as a team with one artist and one illustrator.

Performed poems and songs are also sought with entries to be sent in on a tape or CD.

Narrative poems like those in the Australian bush tradition are also on the menu.

There are six different categories with prizes in each section and the overall winner will be present with a Golden Spike award.

Entry is free.

Entrants are encouraged to use the writings of Spike Milligan and other comic poets as stimulus material.

Woy Woy Library has a special Spike Milligan collection.

The categories for the competition are

*

Crazy or comic verse * Short crazy or comic verse with an original illustration, * Short crazy or comic verse with graphics, * Longer crazy or comic verse, * Performance verse, * Crazy or comic song. A top entry will be selected for the "Golden Spike" award.

A further prize will be given to a student of high schools in the Peninsular and Kincumber area.

Judging will be by a panel of experienced writers and illustrators.

Detailed brochures with entry forms are available from the ground floor at Gosford Council chambers or at city libraries.

The Cavalcades will be held at Wagstaffe Hall on Friday October 10 and 11. Entry will only be by paid ticket. Contact numbers for tickets are 4360 1650 or 4360 1535.
