Sisters compete in national judo titles

Sisters Samantha Travers, 16, and Kristy Travers, 14, attended the Australian Junior National Judo Titles in Melbourne recently after being selected on the NSW State Team.

Both sisters who are members of the Woy Woy Judo Club, qualified at the three selection tournaments by placing first or second in their individual age and weight divisions.

Samantha, who obtained a silver medal last year in Canberra, went into this year's National's as the youngest in her division as she is now 16 she competes in the Junior Women's.

After five fights against girls aged 18 and 19, one being the current Oceania champion, Samantha placed fourth in Australia.

For Kristy, it was her first National Title competition.

Kristy had four fights and won a silver medal in the under 16 years, under 48kg division.

Daniel Simmons also qualified for the State Team in the Junior Men's under 66kg division, but opted not to attend as he is in his HSC Year at St Edwards, East Gosford.

The next big tournament is on Saturday, August 9, at Sydney International Sports Centre, Homebush.

Six members of Woy Woy Judo Club will compete in the New South Wales International Open against players from China, Fiji, New Zealand and Japan.
