Reward to prosecute arsonists

Gosford mayor Cr Robert Bell has said that Peninsula residents could receive a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the successful prosecution of an arsonist responsible for the lighting of a bush fire.

"Gosford has joined Wyong in the campaign against arsonists who have been responsible for numerous fires in the two council areas," said Cr Bell.

"These fires have the potential to destroy property and threaten lives as witnessed in the recent Sydney fires.

"Every fire is the subject of a full investigation by specially trained fire investigation officers who work closely with police.

"Information from the public is critical and has in the past led to the arrest of arsonists.

"Burnt out cars have been the cause of a number of bush fires and anyone committing such an act can be charged with deliberately lighting a bush fire.

"Upon conviction they could face up to 14 years imprisonment," said Cr Bell.

Anyone with information should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
