Channel speed limit introduced for 'the safety of all'

A new speed limit of 20 knots has been introduced in the Ettalong Channel "for the safety of all waterway users", according to NSW Maritime executive director Mr Mark Hutchings.

He said NSW Maritime had carried out a review of boater behaviour in the narrow waterway at the request of members of the community and NSW Maritime patrols.

"Brisbane Water is a popular waterski and jetski location which has experienced an increase in recent years in general boating traffic and towing activities," Mr Hutchings said.

"The review assessed a number of factors including the mix of vessels which frequent the waterway, the potential effect on vessel travel times, including the ferry service, complaints and historical boating compliance."

He said that previously there were "no speed restrictions on this part of Brisbane Water" and it was "up to each skipper to travel at a safe speed according to the conditions".

"The new 20 knot speed zone in the main channel will facilitate safer speeds among all vessels, and provide boaters with enhanced ability to react to hazards and potential incidents - with minimal increase to journey times."

"Signs will be installed to alert skippers to the new speed limit on both sides of the channel in advance of it taking effect."

Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch welcomed the new speed limit, saying community concerns had been answered.

"For years, I have been representing locals to Police and Maritime NSW about the use of jet skis along the Ettalong Channel, and the accompanying traffic and even anti-social behaviour that has gone along with the summer season.

"Speeding jet ski riders have been the biggest cause of complaint.

"I am pleased with this news and hope some of the community concerns are eased with these new limits."

Ms Tesch said her representations in previous summers resulted in increased patrols by Police and Maritime NSW who have issued Boating Infringement Notices for speeding and bad behaviour, stopped and searched vessels, and conducted random breath testing.

Ms Tesch said "the power of the people" had led to the speed limit.

"Without the persistence of concerned locals, authorities wouldn't be aware that this is problem our community faces every summer.

"Jet skis are a part of our local tourism and provide a fantastic and fun leisure activity on our beautiful waterways, but people need to behave themselves and be respectful of other users of our waterways."
