Four awarded sports medal

Four Peninsula residents were the recipients of the Australia Sports medal presented at Gosford Council's administration building late last month.

They were Gordon Crockett, Carole Munday, Danny Simmons and Brian Spencer.

Cr Mayor Chris Holstein said: "This is a very special presentation.

"The Commonwealth Government produced these commemorative medals to celebrate Australia's sporting achievement.

"They're only being issued in the year 2000."

"The medals recognise current and former sports participants and those who have contributed to sport by providing support services.

"Although we've had a huge sporting year on the world scene with the Olympics, Paralympics and other codes, these medals also recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to sport at a local level.

"Councils were asked to submit nominations and these were then passed on to the governor-general for consideration.

"This is a very prestigious medal and everyone receiving one can be justly proud."

Gordon Crockett of Ettalong Beach was involved in numerous sports over the years.

He was an A-grade tennis player, beating Fred Stolle twice in doubles.

He was also a top-grade squash and table tennis player, a single-figure handicap golfer, rugby league coach and president of Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club's senior snooker club.

Carole Munday of Umina Beach has been involved with Umina Tennis and Sports Club since its formation in 1980 and was made a life member in 1988.

Carole actively promotes club and interclub days as well as being involved with junior development and the many groups of social players.

She continues in the management of the club.

Danny Simmons of Horsfield Bay is chief instructor of the Woy Woy Judo Club.

He has been involved with judo for 45 years and represented Australia at the Oceania titles in Japan, winning a silver medal.

Danny teaches judo voluntarily and many of his students have reached national level representation.

He was acknowledged for his dedication to the sport and his students.

Brian Spencer of Bensville was recognised as a dedicated member of Kincumber Soccer Club for the last 16 years.

Brian is a foundation member who has held a variety of positions including president, junior vice-president, senior vice-president, registrar, fixtures officer and women's delegate.

He has also managed and coached teams, refereed, maintained grounds and equipment and raised funds for the club.
