Proposal to double Booker Bay child centre capacity
An application has been made to expand a childcare centre at 97-99 Booker Bay Rd to almost double its capacity from 67 to 126 children.
The work which is costed at $1,055,850 includes extensive alterations to the existing building and will also include construction of a new two-storey building at 2 Davis St connected to the southern side of the existing child care centre.
The application does not comply with planning requirements for car parking or setbacks.
Planning provisions require 37 car spaces, but only 26 are provided, a shortfall of 11 spaces.
Setbacks of as little as 918mm are proposed, where planning provisions require setbacks of 3.0 metres.
The application was prepared by Tim Shelley Planning for the Belong Early Childhood Centre.
The total gross floor area of the expanded development would be 855 square metres, comprised of 556 square metres on the ground floor and 299 square metres on the first floor.
The application says that the proposal addresses "the significant shortfall and overwhelming demand for childcare services in the Booker Bay area".
It claims the existing centre has a waiting list of over 700 families.
Objections have been received from local residents worried about the scale of the development, and problems with noise and traffic.
The application is currently open for public submissions, closing on August 11.
