Malibu contest moved up beach
The Ocean Beach Malibu Club held its July contest on Sunday, July 10, further up the beach than usual.
A large swell forced the move to the "Chongies", a break just north of Ocean Beach Surf Club.
It had been a number of years since a contest was held at this location as the break, up until a few months ago, had not worked properly since 1997.
"With a 9.30am low tide, it was decided to delay the start until the turn of the tide, which was the correct decision, as the surf improved dramatically on the incoming tide," said president Mr Craig Coulton.
"A gale force west north west wind made things a little uncomfortable and very cold, but made for some excellent waves," he said.
Round one winners were Kai Ellice-Flint, Hayden Emery, Bryce Williams, Marty Skewes, Scott Arena and Matt Sing.
Hayden Emery continued his winning form to take out the firsts, from Kai Ellice-Flint and Marty Skewes.
The seconds saw Richie McClelland win from Mark Williams and Peter Wellington while Brent Thoroughgood was victorious in the thirds over Wayne Medcalf and Daniel Ambler.
Shane Muldowney won the fourths from Craig Coulton and John Payne and in the final heat of the day, the rapidly improving Tom Payne placed first, ahead of Mark Rylands and Ty Wilson.
The next Ocean Beach Malibu Club contest is scheduled for Sunday, August 14.
