Graduation ceremony held
Participants in the Work for the Dole program at Umina Recreation Area had their graduation ceremony on Thursday, April 8, at Club Umina.
Gosford Council, in conjunction with the Federal Government, has completed its second Work for the Dole program at Umina Recreation Area.
In just over 12 months, the Work for the Dole program has made significant improvements to the recreation facility.
The second Work for the Dole crew began work in mid-February and their main task was to construct a tricycle track around the existing playground facilities.
Other improvements by the Work for the Dole crews have been landscaping of the skate park, bush regeneration to support the aging population of banksia trees, installation of additional playground equipment, improvements to the BMX track and general maintenance duties.
Four crew members have gained employment as a result of their involvement in the program.
The team was taught skills including construction and concreting, fencing, bush regeneration, playground assembly, turf wicket preparation and BMX track construction.
Community support was seen as essential for the success of the project.
Students from Umina Primary School created tile art decorations which are integral components of the tricycle track.
The assistance of local community groups, such as Mother Nature Parents Club, and input from local youth has assisted with the successful planning and implementation of the Work for the Dole program.
