Junior rugby union starts

Woy Woy Junior Rugby Union Club has started its season for 2004.

This year they have a junior committee and qualified coaches for the children.

"Our main aim to see children playing and enjoying rugby union," said club official John Stokie.

The club has teams in the under-8s, 10s, 13s, 14s, and 15s this year, expanding from just one team last year.

Junior rugby union resembles the adult form of rugby but has been specially adapted to be more suitable for the player's age, physical capabilities, skill level and previous experience.

For example, Under-8s is non-tackling.

The teams train on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm at Ettalong oval and Thursdays: 5.30pm to 7pm at Woy Woy oval.

"We cater for all kids, no matter their skill level.

"Fees are $70 which covers insurance and you are given a pair of team socks and shorts," Mr Stokie said.

"Any children who are looking for a change in their winter sport should come down to training and give it a go."

The club is also looking for some rugby enthusiasts, possibly retirees who would be willing to give up a small portion of time on home games to help setting up of grounds, canteen duty and the barbecue.

"We are basically a new committee looking to improve the profile of junior rugby union on the Peninsula and surrounding areas."
