May action at golf club

The month of May saw some major events finalised at Everglades Men's Golf Club.

On Sunday May 18, Bev Crowther and her newly acquired partner, Shane Smith, proved too strong a combination by taking out the 2003 Mixed Foursomes Championship.

Bev and Shane, with a score of 117, finished two shots clear of runners-up Anne Buckham and Shane O'Brien.

On Saturday, May 3, a field competed for the inaugural "Brian Simmons Memorial Trophy" in conjunction with their monthly medal.

It was won by John McInnes with a nett score of 60.

John organised his score well enough to beat "honest" Mark Wilson on a countback.

Other notable golfing achievements for the month were three sub-par rounds.

On Sunday May 11, Shane O'Brien on a handicap of four returned a score of 42 Stableford points.

This was followed up by Scotty Bennett, on a handicap of two, with a score of 42 Stableford points on Wednesday, May 21.

Not to be outdone, Paul Carson, on a handicap of four carded a score of +7 on Friday, May 23.

Unfortunately for Paul, he had to settle for second place to John McInnes who finished with a handicap-decimating +8.

Kevin Dawkings hit a hole-in-one on the May 15 monthly medal day at the "Elliot" sponsored hole.

As well as a hole-in-one badge and a bottle of scotch whiskey, presented by Everglades Country Club, Kevin also received a bottle of wine and a certificate from winemakers Elliot Rock Estate of Mudgee.

Resignations from the Men's Golf Committee by vice-president Noel Elkin and vice-captain Paul Thorpe were recently received.

Noel and Paul both joined the committee in October 2000, serving on numerous sub-committees.

However, because of their increased business commitments, both felt that they were no longer able to continue to make an effective contribution.

At the last meeting of the men's golf committee Fred Quintrell was voted in as vice-president and Brian Carmichael as vice-captain.

Paul Goodwin and Robert Kelly responded to a request for volunteers to replace Noel and Paul on the committee.
