All welcome at Mingaletta garden

The Mingaletta Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation has started a "Grow Your Own" project at Brisbane Water Secondary College, Umina campus.

The organisation aimed "to enhance the quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents of the Peninsula", according to Peta Sealy from Mingaletta.

It also aimed "to become a model organisation, to help Aboriginal people to become independent, and to protect their culture".

"Our community garden is for everyone, not just indigenous people," said Ms Sealy.

"Mingaletta means 'meeting place' and also 'bringing people together'," she said.

The aim of the project was to increase vegetable, fruit and bush food consumption among Aboriginal families in the Peninsula area.

Project officer Stephen Hamilton will oversee the management of the program.

The project will have a working bee for anyone interested on Sunday, June 22, from 11am until lunch.

A barbecue and refreshments will be supplied.

Mingaletta will be launching the "Grow Your Own" project for NAIDOC week on Monday, June 30.

An official opening will be followed by a flag-raising ceremony and entertainment performed by the Mullawah Dancers from the Hunter School of Performing Arts.
