Scrabble club holds second tournament

Woy Woy Scrabble Club held its second annual tournament at Woy Woy Leagues Club on Saturday, June 7.

One hundred people participated in the event.

Along with around 40 players from all parts of the Central Coast, there were people from Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Blue Mountains, Kempsey, Maitland and one lady from Gunnedah.

Tournament director was Mr Bob Jackman, the current Australian Champion, and one of four people going to represent Australia at the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur this year.

Denise Smith from Woy Woy Scabble Club said: "The Woy Woy tournament seems to be a place where the female players excel.

"In every division, the ladies filled all the places.

"Masters division was won by a visitor from Sydney, Jean McGiffen, and the advanced section saw another Sydneysider, Daphne Bezuidenhout, taking the honours.

"Intermediate division went to a local lady, Ivana Duria, where she won all seven of her games.

"In the recreation division, the locals filled all three places," Denise said.

Margaret Clifford, from Wyong Scrabble Club, playing in her inaugural tournament, won six of the seven games and placed first.

Betty Dennis, from Brisbane Water Scrabble Club, took second place and Leone Sanday from Wyong took third place.

Betty Dennis was also the player who gained the highest rating increase of the day, up by 136 points.

There are now five Scrabble Clubs on the Central Coast, four in the daytime and one in the evening.

The day time clubs are at Woy Woy, Empire Bay, Terrigal and Wyong and the evening club is at Woy Woy.

"If you want to take your Scrabble game to the next level or are just looking for something to keep the little grey cell moving, why not give your nearest club a visit.

"If you would like any further information about any of these clubs please ring 4389 1072," Denise said.
