Urbane Excentrics at folk club
The Troubadour Folk Club will have "Urbane Excentrics" as guests on Friday, May 9, at 8pm
Urban Excentrics use classical bass lines, jazzy guitar chords, traditional instruments and electronic effects to highlight contemporary acoustic material which is both original and borrowed.
One frequent audience member commented that the band sounded like a mini-orchestra, rock band and acoustic kaleidoscope.
Beginning life as a duo, consisting of guitar/cittern -complete with effects - double bass/mandolin and vocals, UE has now expanded to include another double bass/banjo player.
Ann Palumbo began her musical career as a classical guitarist.
She studied double bass at the WA Conservatorium, performing orchestrally while embracing contemporary music.
Guitarist and occasional vocalist Larry Hoofs has no trouble changing from delicate acoustic finger picking to a distorted guitar solo to effects-driven cittern in a display of musical versatility.
Larry's wry vocal delivery and incisive lyrics provide bizarre counterpoint to Ann's impassioned delivery.
Double bass player Paul Laszlo started out as an electric bassist, but fell for the big one and now freelances orchestrally with local and touring orchestras, as well as his jazz and rock gigs.
Urban Excentrics have supported: the Violent Femmes, Max Sharam, Wendy Mathews, D.I.G., Karma County, Black Eyed Susans, Andy White (Ireland) and Rebecca's Empire.
They have performed at many festivals including the National Folk Festival. and the Fairbridge Festival, Western Australia.
Tickets are $8 at the door, which includes supper.
Floorspots are also available.
