Diving club to clean up wharf

Members of Brisbane Water Aqualung Club normally prefers more pristine waters than those to be found at Woy Woy wharf.

But next Sunday, March 2, the club will dive at the wharf as part of Clean Up Australia Day on the Peninsula.

The club regularly participates in Clean Up Australia Day and in previous years has found shopping trolleys, outboard motors, furniture - even kitchen sinks.

"It's amazing what gets tossed into waterways, however it's the small items that cause the most damage to the marine environment," said club member Phillip White.

"Plastic bags, six-pack rings, discarded fishing line and myriad bits and pieces of rubbish end up killing marine life through entanglement and ingestion."

The club will assemble at the wharf at 8am.

The club boat will be there and members will be happy to answer any diving questions.

Divers participating in the event will need heavy duty gloves, ropes, lift bags and dive flags.

Naval cadets from HMAS Hawkesbury at Point Clare will assist in lifting the heavy items and Gosford Diving Services from Umina will supply free air fills.

Anyone wishing to assist the club on the day can ring Steve on 0410 344 155.
