Judo success at tournaments

Woy Woy Judo Club members have competed in two tournaments this month.

The first was on February 2 at Grantham High School, Seven Hills, with the under-10s winning one gold, two silver and three bronze.

Winners were Joshua Rowe, Kieren and Bradley Handley, Tiarna Richardson and Brandon Grosse.

Kayla Wells won gold and Rebecca Steward silver in the under-13s.

Joshua Rowe went up into the under-13s for a trial and achieved gold.

Jolin Richardson and Brendan Steward won bronze.

Samantha Travers won her five fights in the under-16 division against Wollongong, Willoughby, St Mary's and Nowra players.

Brendan Cole took gold and Jacqui Steward took bronze in the under-16s.

The first of three selections for the State team was held at Homebush on February 9.

The club entered eight players.

Although the under-13s are not part of the selection, Kayla Wells won bronze and Naomi Cole silver in their weight division. Naomi also competed in the under-16s for a trial.

Kristy Travers entered two weight divisions in the under-16s and won gold in both.

Samantha Travers won silver in the same age group.

In the young men's division, Daniel Simmons won silver and Steven Arnold bronze.

The next selection tournament is on March 2.

"The club has high hopes for State selection," said club secretary Mrs Lindy Simmons.

Woy Woy Judo Club has received a cheque for $5000 to purchase and install padding on the walls in the judo room at Peninsula Community Centre.

The funding came from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation and was presented to Danny Simmons of Woy Woy Judo Club by Member for Peats, Ms Marie Andrews.
