Lions clubs seek members
The three local Lions clubs have combined in an attempt to reverse declining membership numbers.
The three Clubs are Woy Woy Lions Club, Woy Woy Peninsula Lions, and Ettalong Umina Lions Club.
Woy Woy Lions is the oldest club, chartered in 1958.
Ettalong Umina Lions was chartered in 1974 and Woy Woy Peninsula Lions was chartered in 1978.
The clubs all need some new members to keep the clubs workable.
At a combined meeting, it was decided to ask Peninsula residents to join a Lions Club,
Lions on the Peninsula donate almost all of their fund raising programs to assisting needy causes in the area, such as surf clubs, schools, the Salvation Army and aged care facilities;
They have assisted Child Flight; hospitals; ambulance services; handicapped children, community centre, a renal unit at Gosford Hospital.
They have also supported Guide Dogs, Sight First, Diabetes Foundation; Heart Walkers; drug awareness; Youth Exchange; Youth of the Year Quest; organ transplant and bone marrow registers; Clean up Australia; Lions Park, and barbecue facilities.
Lions help out with Driver Reviver programs and in bush fire crises.
The Lions clubs run varied activities to raise the money needed to assist.
These include car boot sales, debutante balls, bingo, Santa sleigh, trivia nights, Lions mints, Lions Christmas cakes, Easter carnival, raffles, and garage sales.
All of the many varied activities are based on volunteer service, hence the motto "We Serve".
Spokesperson Ms Helen Anderson said: "We do not discriminate between the sexes or occupations, nor do we care about your age.
"We range from 21 years to 84.
"Lions is the world's largest and most active service organisation
"If you feel the need to join a community-minded organisation, or if you think that our community needs to retain the valued place that Lions Clubs represent, you can become a Lion simply by phoning a local club."
