Volunteers from The Croft help clean-up
Brisbane Water Secondary College volunteer teachers and students from The Croft helped in a clean-up of the Henderson Rd mangroves and Rileys Island on Thursday, October 17, as part of the Brisbane Water Foreshore Program Clean4shore.
The mangroves were cleaned by the four students and three teachers in windy conditions with 10 bags stacked for pickup as well as several larger items.
Inspection of the man-made track through the mangroves found approximately 40 tyres lying beneath tidal water which were used to keep feet from getting wet, but restricting growth of local mangroves.
"Apart from the tyres, this section of mangroves is now relatively clean," said Clean4shore coordinator Mr Graham Johnston.
The northern tip of Rileys Island was also inspected which revealed old oyster trays and hardwood stakes, as well as plenty of small litter on dry land.
The area is now free of the white oyster trays and leases.
