Listings wanted for web site

The Peninsula's new community web site, thePeninsulaR.net, is seeking listings of local activities and events, businesses, groups and individuals.

The site, which is an initiative of Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, includes the Peninsula News web site.

It also contains a diary of community events and a list of 80 Peninsula community groups with contact numbers.

A section called "Peninsula on the Web" has links to the web sites of more than 60 businesses, clubs, schools and individuals on the Peninsula.

Its "webmaster", Mr Mark Snell of Open Windows in Woy Woy, said the web site was about the Peninsula for the Peninsula.

"Where many people see the Internet as an opportunity to sell to the world, it is also a tool we can use to build our own community."

He believed the web site would become a ready-reference to all aspects of the Peninsula and complemented the role of Peninsula News.

It did not have the space constraints of the newspaper. It already included 10 issues of the paper.

It could also be updated daily.

"News can be published on the web site soon after it is written," said Mr Snell.

"Meetings called at late notice can be included on the web site, where they might miss the newspaper's deadline."

Mr Snell said the web site was more than just a news medium and diary.

It would also provide directory services. These already included a list of community groups and Peninsula web sites.

"I would like to augment this with an e-mail address book of people who live or work on the Peninsula."

Mr Snell said the plan was to provide as comprehensive a picture of the Peninsula as possible, so listings and links were either free or at minimal cost.

Listing services would also be available for a range of commercial activities.

Currently, the site had a listing of house and flat rentals. It was planned to expand this to include listings of open houses and properties for sale. Garage sales would also be listed.

Other plans included providing tourist information and statistical details about the Peninsula.

Anyone wishing to submit items for listing may post them to PO Box 585, Woy Woy, fax them to 4344 6487 or email them to mark.snell@openwindows.com.

The address of the web site is www.thePeninsulaR.net.
