Umina artist explores interaction between cultures
Umina artist Tomoko Oka will have her exhibition of sumi-e (Japanese ink art) "The Crane and the Kookaburra" displayed in the Gosford Regional Gallery after an opening on Friday, December 6, until Tuesday, January 28.
Originally from Kobe, Japan, she has lived in Umina for around eight years.
Ms Oka said: "It's a series of artworks following a kookaburra's journey and romance in Japan, and his return with the crane to Australia."
She said it was intended to be a light-hearted exploration of the frustrations and joys of experiencing another culture - in this case, the Australian kookaburra experiencing Japanese culture, and a crane fascinated by Australia.
She said the exhibition invited people "to reflect on our own interaction with other cultures, and how meeting people from other nations can open our eyes to the interest and beauty we can find in what is foreign to us".
