Surf patrol member uses training to help neighbour

Umina Surf Life Saving Club has praised one of its patrol members, Shelley Martinovic, for putting her rescue and first aid training to use to help a neighbour.

"Her neighbour had been missing for several hours," said club president Ms Kerry Armstrong-Smith.

"When the family reached out to Shelley, she sprang into action.

"Shelley joined the search effort alongside family, friends, and neighbours, and it was Shelley who ultimately found him.

"He was lying in a creek, his head just above the water, extremely cold and showing signs of hypothermia."

Ms Armstrong-Smith said Shelley followed the procedures she had been taught, called emergency services, reassured him.

"She provided a thorough handover to the ambulance officers, who praised her skills and calm demeanour in such a critical moment."
