Aged care home makes start on 'hotel' for pollinators

With the decline in the numbers of honey bees on the Peninsula, and uncertainty about their return, local gardeners are expected to have to rely on other insects for pollination.

Residents of the Blue Wave Living aged care home in Woy Woy have already made a start on building "insect hotels" to encourage native bees and other pollinators.

"In Men's Club, we have completed stage one in building our very own Insect Hotels," said chief executive Mr Matt Downie.

"While offering sanctuary to beneficial insects, especially pollinators, insect hotels are considered to be the urban solution to the declining population of beneficial insects in human environments due to habitat loss, pollution and abuse of pesticides."

The finished product is expected to be installed over the next few weeks.
