House concerts to start 2024 folk club program
The Troubadour Folk Club has announced it will hold three week-day house concerts with international performers over the next three months in addition to its monthly "grand concerts".
The first house concert will be this Wednesday, January 24, featuring Irish-American shanty singer Tom Lewis.
"In what may be his final tour of Australia, the amazing 80-year-old singer will be performing solo," said Troubadour president Mr Michael Fine.
He said the evening program "also features one of Australia's best shanty singers, a local resident and singer-song writer, in a guest spot".
"You'll have to be there to find out who this guest.
"There's also sure to be a bit of audience participation, as most shanties need a good strong chorus."
He said the concert had almost sold out.
The second house concert will feature UK banjo exponent Dan Walsh on Wednesday, February 7.
"He's one of the most in-demand banjo players for recording sessions in the world," said Mr Fine.
The duo Winter-Wilson will be appearing at the March house concert, fresh from a tour of the UK with British folk rock band Fairport Convention.
Mr Fine said the Troubadour's program of grand concerts would start on Saturday, February 24, "with the Central Coast launch of a new CD by Fred Smith, who many consider to be Australia's greatest contemporary singer-songwriter".
"Fred is perhaps best known for his recent work The Sparrows of Kabul, based on his experiences of the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban."
On Saturday, March 23, Irish writer and singer Eleanor McEvoy will perform along with Scottish harpist Chloe Matharu.
"American-Canadian folk-singer and composer Scott Cook will be appearing in April.
"In May, we have a grand concert with the wonderous, wacky and extremely accomplished Amy Williamson, the daughter of John Williamson, along with Nerida Cuddy from western NSW.
"In June the amazing Mic Conway will be appearing along with Robbie Long, bringing his mad magic and wonderful music to brighten our lives."
