Provide lifeguards with microchip scanners

One day last week an unidentified stray dog was running along Ocean Beach.

It was almost at the end of the lifeguard's shift so he was unable to organise an identity scan by a vet or other authorised person.

The Council lifeguard at this beach is conscientious, caring, and very good at his job, which involves being responsible not just for humans but also any animal that needs assistance.

However, he is hampered in his work by not having any means of identifying the owners of lost dogs.

Would it be possible for Council to provide microchip scanners for the use of lifeguards on Central Coast beaches?

The loss of a dog involves distress not just for the animal of course, but also for its human family, not to mention the danger posed to the public by a frightened dog running loose.
