Self-regulation 'required for learning'
Self-regulation skills are required for learning, according Ettalong Public School relieving deputy principal Ms Jane Crawford.
"To be successful in school, students must be able to regulate their emotions, thoughts and behaviours," she said.
She said the school had started a Second Step program which "promotes development of self-regulation by teaching skills for learning, such as focusing attention, listening, being assertive and using self-talk".
"Students with more ability to self-regulate are more likely to have better numeracy, literacy and vocabulary skills," she said.
They were also more likely to have higher academic achievement, graduate from high school and "choose pro-social responses".
