Student addresses Rotary for second time
A Woy Woy student has been guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Umina for the second time in three years.
The club first heard from Mara Hatfield Favand, as Woy Woy South Public School vice-captain in 2022, when she along with school captain Jonty Beaton proposed the club sponsor First Aid classes in local primary schools.
The club took up the proposal and now has a First Aid Project in all five Peninsula primary schools.
Last week, she spoke to the club about her weekend away as the club's nominee for the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment event at Narrabeen Sports complex.
"She spoke about her amazing experience, and how she was encouraged to step outside of her comfort zone and learnt many confidence-building games," said club president Mr Dave Tanare.
"There were about 60 young people, in four teams.
"There were about eight young mentors at the event, and they organized a lot of fun, challenging activities.
"Some of these were dodge-ball with soft arrows, crate stacking and raft building.
"All these activities were designed to encourage the participants to sharpen up their communication skills, team bonding, confidence and leadership skills.
"Mara, being a vegetarian, loved the special tasty meals prepared there and she said that the accommodation was extremely comfortable too."
Mara commented on what she felt were changes that she had observed In herself and those she had noticed in others.
Mara said she hoped to undertake a Duke of Edinburgh Award bronze course later this year.
Mr Tanare thanked Mara at the end of her presentation and acknowledged Mara's father Mr Jerome Favand, who came along to hear the talk.
