Rotary cafe provides 'calm and supportive space'
A cafe for dementia sufferers and their carers is being run by the Rotary Club of Brisbane Water on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, from 10am to noon, in the Umina CWA Hall.
The cafe was the result of the club's "ongoing commitment to providing a calm and supportive space for dementia sufferers and their carers", said club secretary Ms Di Bartok.
"People with dementia living at home and their carers, who are usually their spouse, enjoy a convivial atmosphere, where our volunteers serve them refreshments and chat with them.
"The morning is rounded off with some simple games and chair yoga.
"Many of the participants have been coming for a while, and all report that it is the highlight of their week.
"We have become like a family.
"Some spouses who, sadly, have lost their partner, return to enjoy the cameraderie."
