College students excel in HSC
Students at Brisbane Water Secondary College have excelled in the 2003 HSC.
Principal Mr David Beattie said that students achieved fantastic results in all subjects.
"Outstanding students included Martin McGrath, Alex Bennison, Dave Jenkins, Amy Birrell, Adam Austin, Belinda Sutton, Laura Baker and Andrea Fauvette who all achieved results in the 90s," he said.
Martin scored 95 in the difficult mathematics course and 45/50 in the extension course.
Alex and Dave, both members of the popular band Fyna, both scored over 90, with Dave being asked to perform in the HSC Encore concert at the Opera House in February next year.
Adam Austin made the distinguished achievers list for extension maths, Alex Bennison for music, Amy Birrell for ancient history, David Jenkins for music, Martin McGath for information process and technology as well as extension maths and Belinda Sutton for food technology.
Mr Beattie said: "The Senior Campus has really moved forward this year and has put in place a range of programs designed to improve students' results."
One of these, the popular "Make a Difference" program was designed to increase students' understanding of the HSC and further develop positive study habits.
"Students benefited from the experience of one-on-one tutoring and support for their learning," Mr Beattie said.
"Year 12 students should be proud of their achievements.
"They have all met our expectations and we know that they will enter the workforce or go to University well prepared."
Three students have been accepted into University on early entry by successfully completing interviews, while a number of other students will be going to Ourimbah Campus to further their studies.
"Another pleasing outcome of the Year 12 class of 2003 is the number of students who have gained apprenticeships or traineeships, ranging from building to retail and hospitality," Mr Beattie said.
The Senior Campus will continue to focus on quality learning and teaching in 2004, along with initiatives like the Sports Academy and Performing Arts Academy.
Subjects in which the school performed particularly well were English, art, music, textiles and design, food technology, PD/H/PE, senior science, general maths, extension maths, hospitality, retail, donstruction, information technology and dance."
