Saving trees is not 'undesirable'
Behind the bustling aisles of Woy Woy Woolworths lies a hidden treasure unbeknownst to many Peninsula dwellers: a grand grove of trees now perilously poised for a sell-off by Central Coast Council.
These trees stand tall as sentinels, their robust trunks and outstretched branches a testament to nature's splendour, unique in Woy Woy.
Among their lofty embrace, native birds and bats find sustenance, while swamp mahoganies grace the grove with their presence.
It's a tranquil haven for folks like me who cherish leisurely strolls beneath their leafy canopy, finding solace in the cool shade and the vibrant wildlife they shelter.
Yet, shockingly, in council documents, the rationale for this imminent sale includes the derogatory claim that the area is frequented by "undesirables".
Fuelled by a fiery determination, over 1600 signatures now adorn our cause - conversations turned commitments, the collective voice rising against the sacrilege of sacrificing Austin Butler Reserve's trees to convenience for a private enterprise.
The responsibility to safeguard our cherished Woy Woy greenery rests upon the shoulders of Mr Rik Hart as steward of Central Coast Council.
Until elected councillors reign, it's his duty to nurture, not negotiate away, our beloved haven.
The onus to reclassify this site from "Community" to "Operational" ultimately lies with Minister for Planning Paul Scully.
His signature could preserve our leafy sanctuary.
We implore our local advocate Liesl Tesch to rise swiftly in urging him to stop this sale.
Let's not be mere bystanders as chainsaws threaten our solace.
Unite, rally, and roar for our trees' survival.
The soul of Woy Woy is rooted in this fight.
