Artists exhibit at club
The Peninsula Art Exhibition was officially opened by comedienne Jeannie Little on Friday, August 18, at the Ettalong Beach Memorial Club.
The large crowd present included Member for Peats Marie Andrews and each of the artists whose work was on display.
All artists are Peninsula-based and were: Robert Duffield, photography; Meredith Gilmore, water-colours and pastels; Jennifer Marigold Weine, silk works; Yvonne Mapstone, sculpture; Sabine Parge, textiles; Patrick Rufatt, oils; Garry Taylor, illustrator; Clark Wilson, oils and watercolours, and; exhibition co-ordinator, Bernard Craft, water-colours and pen and ink.
The exhibition closed on Saturday, August 19, and art works donated by Bernard Craft and Patrick Rufatt were raffled with proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Institute.
Organiser Bernard Craft said the exhibition allowed the artists to take a higher profile in the community.
"Most of the artists are community-minded and they would love to be offered a greater part to play in its every day life, but the Peninsula is lacking in facilities to develop its local talent."
He said the Peninsula was "teaming with talents and with budding artists, writers, sculptors, weavers, potters, because it is such a good place to escape from Sydney while remaining close to its market".
"Localities with a strong artistic flavour quickly gain the favour of tourists," said Bernard.
"We cant stage the Olympics here but we have other talents to offer.
"If all local artists were to gain support from the community, businesses and the local government, the Peninsula could grow into a thriving art centre."
