Food service seeks volunteers

Volunteers are being sought by a Peninsula food service which aims to address local hunger.

"We offer low cost and some free food to support individuals and families in our community who are experiencing food insecurity," said Food Rescue project officer Ms Fiona MacPhail from Community SOS.

Community SOS operates from the Meals on Wheels building adjacent to the Peninsula Community Centre in Woy.

Its "People's Pantry" runs from 11:15am to 2:30pm every Monday and Wednesday except public holidays.

"In 2024, we diverted more than 22,000kg of edible food that might otherwise have ended up in landfill.

"We have a variety of volunteer positions available."

Volunteer roles include helping in the pantry, stocking shelves, chatting with customers, working at the point of sale counters, with some lifting required of boxes weighing five to 10kg boxes.

Food Rescue volunteers drive a van on Sundays, helping to pick up food and unpack deliveries.

Some lifting is required of up to 20kg boxes.

Volunteers do not have to commit to attending every day or every week.

For more information, phone 4329 4477 and ask for Ms Vivian Muraahi.

The People's Pantry can be found in the Yaringaa Building, in John Hoare Close, Woy Woy.
