Council will plant street trees, says shade group

The Peninsula's Grow Urban Shade Trees group has been told that council workers will plant street trees for residents who order free street trees through the group this autumn.

Despite the Council having a "limited" budget, the group is welcoming the move as "a small but significant step towards catching up to other councils".

The group was hoping that the council would wide-scale street tree planting as a standard service "as we see in other local government areas", said group member Ms Jen Wilder.

The voluntary group, which currently provides a free street tree planting service, would like the council to take over its role.

Ms Wilder said the change would require a "cultural shift", encouraged by residents and sympathetic friends from other council areas.

"Heat now the most fatal of all natural hazards," said Ms Wilder.

"Shading hot impervious surfaces, like roads, has never been more important."

She said the group was currently taking orders for street trees by email, social media and its website.
