Outrigger success at Kalang River Classic

Woy Woy-based Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club has had a successful weekend at the Kalang River Classic at Urunga on the Mid-North Coast on February 22 and 23.

The race saw 150 paddlers take part to raise money for the local Marine Rescue unit.

Central Coast members Cath Day and Andy Debus were first of the two-person outrigger canoes, with Debbie Sunartha and Gary Machin taking third place.

Linda Donnini was first in the women's one-person outriggers.

"This race has such a great atmosphere," said Linda.

"Any type of non-powered craft can take part.

"There were dragonboats, outriggers, paddleboards, surf skis and kayaks all coming together for a good cause."

"The locals were cheering us on from the bank," said Debbie Sunartha.

"In the two-person canoe, many called out: 'The person in the back isn't paddling'."

The club trains regularly from Woy Woy and Patonga.
